Wholesale distribution moves product by the case, and every case needs an ITF-14 so receiving bays can scan a whole shipment in seconds. The ITF-14 carries the 14-digit case GTIN - the inner product's number with a packaging indicator - and its thick bars print directly onto corrugated boxes without labels. Where does the ITF-14 number come from?
From the product's own GTIN: take the packaging indicator (1-8 for standard cases), the inner item's GTIN-13 digits, and the check digit is calculated automatically. Different case sizes get different indicator digits.
Can I print ITF-14 straight onto the cardboard?
Yes - that is what the symbology is designed for. Its wide bars survive corrugated texture and ink spread; include the heavy bearer bar border when printing directly on the box.
Does every case need a unique ITF-14?
Cases of the same product with the same count share one ITF-14. A different pack count, mixed-SKU case or display-ready case is a different trade item and needs its own number.
Can I batch print case codes for a full shipment?
