What is UPC-E for Small US Packages?
Tiny US retail items - gum, lipstick, small hardware - often cannot fit a full-width UPC-A, so GS1 issues a UPC-E: a compressed version of the same number in about half the width. The checkout scanner reconstructs the full UPC-A from the short code automatically. This tool produces the compact UPC-E artwork for small-package labels.
Common Uses for UPC-E for Small US Packages
- Gum, candy and small impulse retail items
- Compact cosmetics and personal-care packaging
- Small US and Canada products too small for UPC-A
- Retail items where the supplier number qualifies for compression

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between UPC-E and UPC-A?
UPC-E is a compressed (zero-suppressed) form of UPC-A, about half the width, used when a tiny package cannot fit the full 12-digit code.
Can any UPC-A become a UPC-E?
Only UPC-A numbers with the right pattern of zeros can be compressed to UPC-E. If yours qualifies, GS1 US can issue it for small packaging.
What digits do I enter?
The number-system digit plus six data digits, or the full 8-digit code. The generator calculates the check digit for you.
Can I batch generate small-package UPC-E?
Yes, paste a list of UPC-E numbers and generate a full sheet of compact labels.
