What is Code 93?
Code 93 is an alphanumeric linear barcode designed as a more compact alternative to Code 39. It encodes the same digits and uppercase letters in about 40% less space and supports the full ASCII set through pairs of characters. It appears in logistics, electronics and labelling applications where a denser Code 39 is needed but full Code 128 is more than required.

Code 93 vs Code 39
Both encode uppercase letters and digits, but Code 93 is about 40% denser, which means it prints smaller and still scans reliably. Code 39 wins on sheer installed base and the simplicity of older scanners; Code 93 wins on label space. If your data needs lowercase or special characters, Code 128 is the better choice over both.
Code 93 Check Characters
Code 93 appends two check characters computed from the data - stronger error checking than most linear codes. Scanners verify both on every read. The generator handles these automatically, so every barcode produced here is complete and self-checking.
Code 93 in Practice
You will most often meet Code 93 where an existing Code 39 system ran out of label space - postal, freight and electronics labelling. It reads with the same laser or camera scanners as Code 39, so adopting it usually requires no new hardware.
