What is DataMatrix?

DataMatrix is a two-dimensional barcode that can encode a large amount of data in a very small space. It is used in electronics manufacturing, medical devices, aerospace and automotive for direct part marking (DPM) because it can be etched or laser-marked and remains scannable even when partially damaged.

Common Uses for DataMatrix

  • Electronics and PCB component marking
  • Medical device and pharmaceutical tracking
  • Aerospace and automotive part marking
  • Small-item serialization (UDI)

DataMatrix in Healthcare (UDI)

The FDA's Unique Device Identification (UDI) rule requires most medical devices to carry a DataMatrix code on their label or packaging. The code encodes the device identifier (DI) and production identifiers (lot, serial, expiry). Because DataMatrix packs a lot of data into a tiny space and stays scannable when marked directly on metal or plastic, it's the standard for medical device traceability worldwide.

ECC200 vs Older DataMatrix

The current DataMatrix standard is ECC200, which includes built-in error correction that can recover the data even if up to 30% of the code is damaged. Older variants (ECC000-140) lack this and are rarely used today. All modern scanners and this generator use ECC200, so the codes you produce are fully error-corrected and industry compliant.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is DataMatrix used for?
DataMatrix is used for direct part marking on electronics, medical devices, aerospace and automotive parts where space is limited and durability is required.
What is the difference between DataMatrix and QR code?
DataMatrix is smaller and more damage-tolerant (good for etched industrial marking), while QR is larger, holds more data, and is designed for mobile scanning.
Can DataMatrix be laser-etched?
Yes, DataMatrix is the preferred symbology for laser etching and dot-peen marking because it stays scannable even with damage.
Can I batch generate DataMatrix codes?
Yes, paste a list of values and generate the batch for printing or etching.
