What is MSI Plessey?
MSI (also called MSI Plessey) is a numeric-only barcode developed from the Plessey code, mainly used on warehouse shelf labels, inventory tags and some retail backroom systems. It encodes digits only and is simple to print, so it survives in specific inventory workflows even though Code 128 has replaced it almost everywhere else.
Common Uses for MSI Plessey
- Warehouse shelf and bin location labels
- Legacy inventory and stock-control tagging
- Library and archive shelf codes where the system expects MSI
- Backroom retail scanning applications
MSI Plessey vs Code 128
MSI is a legacy symbology you typically meet only when integrating with an older scanner or inventory database that was configured for it. It is numeric-only and less versatile than Code 128. If you are designing a new label system, choose Code 128; if you must match existing hardware or a supplier's spec that calls for MSI, use this generator.
MSI Check Digits
MSI can include one or two Mod-10 check digits computed from the data, depending on the reader configuration. Because configurations vary, confirm the check-digit scheme your system expects before printing a production run - the generator encodes the digits you enter as-is.
