What is GS1 DataMatrix?
GS1 DataMatrix is a two-dimensional barcode that carries GS1 Application Identifiers (AIs) - the same structured data language as GS1-128 - inside a compact square matrix. A single code can hold the GTIN plus lot, serial number and expiry date, which is why regulators and retailers standardised on it: FDA UDI device labelling, EU pharmaceutical serialization, fresh-food traceability and healthcare item scanning all specify GS1 DataMatrix. It is not the same as a plain DataMatrix, which carries unstructured text.
Common Uses for GS1 DataMatrix
- FDA UDI labels for medical devices (DI + lot, serial, expiry)
- EU FMD pharmaceutical serialization codes on medicine packs
- Fresh food and healthcare item-level traceability labels
- GS1 supply-chain labels where a 2D code is required
Common GS1 Application Identifiers in 2D codes
The AIs you will encode most: (01) GTIN trade item number, (10) batch or lot, (11) production date, (17) expiry date in YYMMDD, and (21) serial number - the combination (01)(17)(10)(21) is the classic healthcare and pharma payload. Enter each AI with its parentheses in one continuous string; the tool inserts the FNC1 separators where variable-length fields end, exactly as GS1 requires.
GS1 DataMatrix in healthcare (UDI and FMD)
The FDA's UDI rule and the EU Falsified Medicines Directive both accept GS1 DataMatrix as the carrier for mandatory product data: device identifier plus production identifiers on medical devices, and a unique serial plus expiry on medicine packs. The 2D format was chosen because it fits the full AI payload in a few millimetres - small enough for a syringe barrel or a medicine carton - while staying readable after sterilisation and handling.
Sizing and printing GS1 DataMatrix
Keep the printed symbol at least 10x10mm for handheld scanning, and 5x5mm only where fixed-mount close-range readers are guaranteed. Use the default error correction, print dark modules on a light background with a quiet zone of one module width, and verify one label with a GS1-capable verifier or scanner app before running the production batch - healthcare and pharma partners often require a verified grade.
